Think about the end result. Are you going to display the photos? Do the colors go with your home décor? Are they too bold? Perhaps opt for more muted neutral tones.

Always start with Mom’s outfit and base everything off that. A solid color or patterned maxi dress works best. I always aim for interesting textures. Something that makes YOU feel great! A-line dresses are a great way to accentuate the waistline. Think rich colors for sunset sessions (Rust, mustard, teal, olive, burgundy).

Family outfits should not be too matchy matchy (identical). Pull colors from mom’s outfit, coordinating colors, or contrasting colors. Pinterest has some wonderful color scheme and outfit guides.

Girls always look great in dresses. Different textures create interest. Think linen, lace, tulle, wool, jean ect. Accessories should be minimal.

Guys are easy. Choose a solid color top, t-shirt, henley or polo. Muted tones work well. Ball caps should be avoided if possible as they create shadows in the eyes.

A few more helpful tips:

Avoid anything with graphics.

Be conscious of shoes.

Avoid sneakers.

Layers add texture which adds interest. Overalls, cardigans, stockings, long socks ect.

Empty pockets before the shoot. No cell phones, wallets or keys,

Remove smart watches, hair ties from wrists and sunglasses prior to the session.

Be prepared. Extra snacks, drinks or a change of outfit can help. Bribery is my go-to. But please avoid lollipops! Instead, choose finger foods that can be easily hidden.

Plan sessions accordingly around naps/bedtime if possible. Sunset sessions are difficult for little ones but SO worth it! You know your children better than anyone. Shortening nap time and adding a second or third nap may help some, while others may not do well with a change in routine. Do what works best for your family!

Don’t overthink it! Let’s have fun and create some memories. Kids will be kids. Real emotions are always more valuable than painfully posed smiles (or tears). It’s REAL LIFE!

Please don't hesitate to ask for help!
